A young widow from an unhappy marriage, this historical YA novel revolves around Marnie, stuck in a house regarded as 'cursed' by her seaside town populated by superstitious strangers. The only person she finds she can befriend is a young man known as 'Raver', the local madman. Community feeling turns even further against Marnie when she strikes up a deeper relationship with him. Their closer friendship leads Marnie to discover that Raver (renamed Raven) is actually profoundly deaf. They work together to find ways in which they can communicate with one-another. Both the characters of Marnie and Raven are fresh and interesting. Both have been affected in different ways by a world that seemingly doesn't understand them. A fast-paced, rich and beautiful story by a much-loved New Zealand author of young adult fiction.
