The Cay is a story that combines inter-related issues of disability and race. An adventure story set in the 1960s, young Phillip is shipwrecked and stranded on an island in CuraƧao. He is blinded in an accident and left with an elderly black man called Timothy. Left together for two months, the protagonist is forced to come to terms with his blindness and the racial prejudices which keep Timothy and Phillip apart. The Cay is a classic novel with a strong theme of disability issues, as well as those of race and privilege. It would be of interest to young adult readers wanting an exciting read. It also falls into the category of being something of a classic. The novel is interesting in that it deals not just with a disabled character, but a disabled character confronting issues of race.
