As seen from the point of view of a fifteen-year-old teenager with autism, although never specifically identifying himself as being autistic. Teenager Christopher John Francis Boone, living in England, discovers the dead body of their neighbour's poodle on the front lawn. He takes it upon himself to track down the "murderer". The ensuing investigation is both helped and hindered by his autism. Along the way Christopher runs afoul of the police and is forbidden from continuing the investigation. Howevert the book ends with Christopher discovering the true identity of the dog "murderer" of the dog and also finding a new optimism for his own future.
